In honor of Mother's Day, Peoples Flower Shops asked one of our floral designers---who also happens to be a mom---to share her experience and also her expertise when it comes to selecting the perfect flowers for mom this May 13.
Name: Heather Henderson-Rivera
Child's first name and age: Kyleigh Ann Rivera, 22.
How did you get into floral work?
My mother, Marietta, moved out to Albuquerque, New Mexico with my father in the mid 1960s. She became employed as a day surgery nurse at a local hospital. As an outlet and a way to artistically express herself when not working as as nurse, she volunteered at a flower shop. I always thought as a kid (and into adulthood) how neat it was of her to go help out at the flower shop and design flowers. To this day, my mother is an incredible artist. Her forte is watercolor painting. While attending college and studying to become a social worker, I followed in my mother's footsteps and volunteered at several flowers shops. Through volunteering, I found my passion! It gets in your blood. Read More about The Mother Of All Days »
Think back on your own graduation time and a few key moments are likely to stand out---crossing the stage to retrieve your diploma, celebrating with friends and family afterward, the feeling of complete accomplishment and the excitement of summer, college or a new job on the horizon. Peoples Flower Shops knows this is one of the most momentous occasions in our lives, and the flowers we both give and receive become a part of that memory. In many cases, these are the first flowers our young scholars will receive, which is why getting them right is so important. Read More about A Rainbow Of Flowers For Your Favorite Grad »

May is a big month for women; we've got Mother's Day, National Nurses Day and National Teachers Day all in the first couple of weeks. Since these last two reflect fields mostly dominated by women, we can safely say that this is really a time to appreciate and honor the strongest women in our lives. Peoples Flower Shops thinks these super ladies should be feted and thanked all year long, but this is definitely the moment to make your gratitude concrete. We've come up with two ideal gifts for the women who educate, nurture, protect and otherwise empower the rest of us. Read More about Fantastic Gifts For Fantastic Women »

On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, a global event that has millions turning their attention toward terra firma and how they can take care of it. Earth Day educates us on our environment, promotes awareness about how to steward it and helps our youngest citizens become excited about taking care of it. It also reminds us to revel in our bountiful natural resources and riches, a thing that we here at Peoples Flower Shops know a little about. Read More about Flowers That Celebrate Earth Day »

Here at Peoples Flowers, we would never miss the chance to say thank you to our administrative professionals, whose official day falls this year on April 25. And we've got just the way to kick things off, with a little initiative we're calling "Desktop Awareness." After a long winter, we're certain that most work spaces could use a little perking up, if not a downright overhaul. We're shining a light on the sorry states of our desks and demanding more. We're demonstrating how flowers and plants can make a huge difference in our work lives, and we're doing it on behalf of the admins. Here in Albuquerque, we love our succulents. Not only do we plant them outside in spring, we look for ways to keep them in our lives all year long---and that includes introducing the artificial variety into our spaces. But here at Peoples Flower Shops, we've got a fresh way to welcome spring through succulents right in our very homes. Read More about Plant A Garden Indoors And Out For Spring »
Easter is known just as much for its baskets as it is for what goes in them: a rainbow of dyed eggs after a hunt, chocolate bunnies and yellow Peeps. But Peoples Flower Shops has another idea when it comes to a bright, lively spring basket: filling it with flowers. A basket has long symbolized comfort and plenty, ever since ancient farmers brought their spring seedlings in baskets to be blessed in the hopes of a successful planting season. Have we mentioned how much we love spring here at Peoples Flowers? If not, allow us to say it again for the people in the back: we love spring, not just for the glorious haul of seasonal flowers it brings us, but because we too share in a sense of renewal and the idea that a new year is finally unfolding. Of course, our flowers go a long way in helping us keep up that spirit. Spring's crop is not only beautiful but fragrant, and the fragrance is a crucial part of keeping the mood light and uplifted. Flowers
There are many things to look forward to this spring but one of our favorites here at Peoples Flowers is, well, the flowers. Shocker, we know. There are so many traditional blooms associated with this time of year, some of them blooming strictly from the garden and others easily fresh cut and put into designs. We love them all---crocus, hyacinth, lilac, tulip---you name it, and if we can get our hands on it, we'll work it into something special to celebrate the season. Peoples Flower Shops can't wait to celebrate the most influential women in our lives this March 8, International Women's Day. And while we don't necessarily have a flower dedicated for gifting on IWD in the U.S., we'd like to nominate the orchid. Here's why. Read More about Fresh Orchids For International Women’s Day »
