How to Set the Perfect Table

for Spring Occasions

As spring begins in March, so too do spring occasions. Spring often calls for many kinds of celebrations, from Easter and Passover to baby showers and weddings. If you're hosting or cohosting one of these special events, knowing how to set the table properly and make it beautiful with seasonal flowers and plants is essential.

Setting the Table for Special Occasions

The fundamental elements needed to create a formal table setting include a dinner plate, a fork to its left, a knife on its right (always blade in), and a spoon to the right of the knife. A drinking glass should be placed in the upper right corner. If multiple courses are being served, the forks should be placed as follows: a large dinner fork closest to the plate and a small salad fork to its left. A dessert fork and/or spoon can be placed above the dinner plate horizontally in the center. A small bread plate with a butter knife sitting on top should be placed in the upper left corner. To finish, a napkin can be placed on the dinner plate. Experts often advise against placing napkins under the forks to make it easy to grab the napkin as soon as needed.

Additional Items to Make It Grand

Once you have the basics, it's time to create beautiful and welcoming place settings for your guests. Add charger plates underneath each dinner plate to make your table look full and grand. Name cards are another thoughtful touch that always makes guests feel appreciated and loved. Instead of placing a square folded napkin on the plate, use napkin rings to dress things up and match the theme of your event. Something wooden or handwoven is perfect for a rustic look, while metallics and gemstones will bring the glam. You can also get creative with napkin folds. One fun trend is to create a bow by folding your napkin into a long, thin rectangle, crossing each end, and sliding the napkin ring into the center.

Spring Floral Centerpieces

No spring table setting is complete without fresh spring flowers! This time of year, our favorite blooms are tulips, hyacinths, lilacs, daffodils, and daisies. As the first sign of spring with their iconic pastel hues, tulips symbolize love and rebirth, while fragrant hyacinths offer lush clusters in vibrant purples and seasonal hues. Both blooms add a fun, timeless spring feel to celebratory table designs. Lilacs have delicate blossoms and calming lavender tones that represent renewal and first love - beautiful for showers and weddings. Daffodils are another spring classic, adding fresh yellows and a cheerful mood. A go-to accent flower that always looks whimsical and innocent is daisies. Pair them with any collection of spring stems for a sweet look. Of course, roses are always in season, and for spring, we love to see a variety of pastel-colored roses. For Easter dinner, white lilies, with their striking beauty and symbolism of purity, perfectly reflect the spirit of spring and renewal.

Flowerful Accents to Welcome Guests

In addition to centerpieces, there are many ways to include flowers in your tablescape or to welcome and celebrate guests as they arrive. Single stems placed delicately on top of napkins are always a charming detail that never goes unnoticed. Small floral arrangements in bud vases scattered along the table can complement centerpieces while keeping the design light and airy. If you're celebrating a bride or mom-to-be, grandparents, or other guest of honor, welcoming them with a fresh corsage or boutonniere is extra thoughtful. These small moments are filled with meaning and love and will be the ones guests cherish forever.

Consider Spring Plants

Vibrant green plants are also thriving in the springtime. As you celebrate special occasions this time of year, incorporate plants into your event. A runner made of eucalyptus or ivy creates a natural, organic, or even garden party vibe, while small potted succulents can double as place markers and take-home favors. Single green stems tucked into napkin folds or scattered around the table add a modern, minimalist feel. If you're feeling adventurous, try mixing green plants with bright flowers for a fresh, layered look that's trendy, youthful, and colorful, creating a warm, sunny garden aesthetic.
